Anti-hair loss is the second more prevalent treatment claim in India, behind anti-dandruff
Oil is the preferred format
Anti-hair loss claims will be supplemented by hair growth benefits in the future

Anti-hair loss products make up almost of a quarter of treatment launches in India, gaining ground on the more established anti-dandruff sector

•  Anti-hair loss treatments are currying favour in India

Indian anti-hair loss launches are growing again. Although launch numbers grew steadily between 2007 and 2010, they declined in 2011 and 2012, but then recovered some ground in 2013, and all the signs point to further growth in 2014.

In all, anti-hair loss products accounted for almost a quarter (23%) of all hair treatments launched in India, making anti-hair loss the second most common beauty enhancing claim after anti-dandruff.

Hair loss is a sensitive issue for Indian men and women, and consumers are more in a better position than ever to afford treatments that claim to remedy the problem. India’s GDP has risen rapidly and is now ranked the 10th largest in the world. The Indian economy grew 6.2% in 2011-12, before slowing to 5% for the 2012–13 fiscal year. This growth may have fuelled the consumer economy but it has also raised concerns about the environment, work-related stress, and improper eating habits, all of which are blamed for hair loss and receding hairlines. In 2013, more than three in 10 anti-hair loss treatments (34%) were launched in India, making it the largest market for anti-hair loss introductions.

•  Oil is the preferred anti-hair loss treatment format

Oil is the preferred format for Indian consumers when it comes to anti-hair loss products, building on its traditional place in Indian grooming regimes. In 2013, six in 10 Indian treatments were oils, and 67% of treatment oils make anti-hair loss claims. The top claims in these anti-hair loss oils were botanical/herbal, skin disorders and anti-dandruff, underlining the products' holistic nature and the strong influence of Ayurveda in the Indian hair and scalp category.
